Background Information     

A Global Perspective

As staggering as the numbers already are, the orphan crisis in Sub-Saharan Africa is only beginning to unfold. By end of 2010 HIV/AIDS had robbed an estimated 25 million children, under the age of 15, of one or both parents.

The Facts:

  • Globally, there were an estimated 34 million  people  living with HIV in 2010. 22.9 million of these in Sub-Saharan.

 

  • Globally, an estimated 2.7 million  people were newly infected with HIV in 2010,  1.9 million of these in  sub-Saharan Africa.
     
  • There were 1.8 million deaths from AIDS in 2010, with 1.2 million of these deaths in Sub-Saharan Africa (in one year).

 

  • Globally, around 390 000 children were born with HIV in 2010


  


Kenya  HIV and AIDS estimates, (KDHS 2008-9)

  • HIV prevalence ages 15-49 at 6.3%
  • (13.9% in Nyanza province)
  • 8% women compared to 4.3% for men.
  • young women 15-24 age group 4.5% and men 1.1%
  • People living with HIV 1.3 - 1.6 million
  • New infections 100,000 in 2009 for adults (15+)
  • All children infected is estimated to be 184,052 by 2009.
  • 22,259 children got newly infected in 2009
  • 2.4 million children are orphans, half due to HIV and AIDS
