Introducing the NCC Center
The idea of starting a center
to cater for orphans comes from personal encounters with AIDS orphans from
within our home and the surrounding areas. After losing several brothers and
their wives to the scourge of HIV/AIDS, and being faced with the needs of
several surviving orphans for whom we have had to pay school fees and provide
sustenance, we decided to broaden the approach and to seek help from the many
willing people. The main driving force emanates from our deep spiritual belief
that it is our duty to provide assistance to the unfortunate in our societies.
In addition to meeting the material needs of the young children, it is our
fundamental aim that this center must provide spiritual developmental aspects to
these children and to have a discernible impact on the local communities. To
this end, the individuals involved in running the project are selected
carefully to reflect this desire. For long term sustainability, we plan to
introduce income generating activities at the center.
Our aim is to establish a center around which all the activities will revolve.
While we develop the physical structures at the center, considering the gravity
and urgency of the situation, we have started dispatching some minimal help to
these orphans. The assistance includes clothing, school fees and supplies, food and medicine.
The project has two goals: First, the short-term goal which is to address the
immediate needs of the orphans and vulnerable children, and second, is a
long-term goal to strengthen the capacity of families to protect and care for
orphans and vulnerable children, as well as providing support for careers such
as grandmothers through improving their economic capacities.
The project targets both the orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) because
the latter are children who are not orphans but are vulnerable for a number of
reasons such as parents suffering from HIV/AIDS, or sheer abject poverty. NCC caters for OVCs within their
families comprising of surviving parents/care-givers. Efforts have been made to try and place
children within extended families rather than in the center.
